Velo 2.4.1 — Practice, leveled up 🎹

This one's all about Practice — it looks better, teaches better, and a big community request landed.

🎚️ Sustain in Free play

One Sustain control — a Settings toggle, a Free-play button, and a rebindable hotkey, all synced. Turn it off and preview/QWERTY notes stop at their real length; on and they ring out like before. No more notes stuck ringing during a MIDI preview.

🎨 Sheet — rhythm colours

The letter sheet now shows the rhythm by colour, like the tutorial apps: 🔴 fast · 🟢 slow · 🟠 arpeggio — so you can read the timing at a glance. Toggle it in the Sheet bar. And Sheet now has Fullscreen, with a clean, distraction-free reading mode.

✨ Step looks like the rest

Step mode now runs on the same glowing canvas as Rhythm and Free play (with the note letters) instead of the old grey tiles — while staying self-paced (it waits for the right key). The visualizer customization gear is now in Step and Rhythm too, and the lit keys wear your chosen colour, not a fixed green.

🖥️ Fullscreen fixes

The piano now fills the screen in fullscreen, and a few stuck-highlight glitches between modes are gone.

💡 Faithful heads-up

Pick Faithful on a QWERTY keyboard and a small tip points you to Balanced/Easy — the modes you can actually play by hand.

quick note about the <#1525144470709080185> channel: we've been seeing a lot of requests for transcription in the app. It's definitely something we'd like to add, but right now our priority is growing the community again. We've lost a significant number of members over the past two months, so we're focusing our efforts there first. Once things are more stable, we'll be able to put more attention into new features like transcription.

also, before posting an idea, please make sure it doesn't already exist in Velo or has already been suggested on the server. This helps keep the channel organized and avoids duplicate suggestions.

🐧 The Linux version of Velo is back — and up to date!

Linux support had fallen behind, but it's now updated to the latest version and live again — tested and confirmed running on Fedora, Ubuntu/Debian, Arch and openSUSE.

How to get it (one-time, ~1 min):

1. Download velo-linux.tar.gz from the latest release ⬇️
2. Open a terminal where you saved it and run:

tar xzf velo-linux.tar.gz
cd velo-linux
./install-linux.sh

The installer sets everything up using your system's own libraries and adds Velo to your apps menu — after that just search "Velo" and launch it like any app (or type velo in a terminal).

What works: the full player, Practice, Compose, Stage, real sound and MIDI input — the whole app, current with the Windows version.
⚠️ Heads-up: "playing" a song into an on-screen game piano (Roblox / Virtual Piano) needs an X11/Xorg session — Wayland blocks app-to-app typing. Everything else works on both.

Windows users: nothing changes — keep grabbing Velo-win.zip as always. 🎹

Velo — QWERTY vs MIDI Output (how to use it)

Velo can send what it plays to other apps in two different ways. Pick the one
that matches what you're playing into:

• QWERTY → Velo types the on-screen letters (for letter-based pianos like
Virtual Piano or Roblox pianos). No setup needed.

• MIDI Output → Velo sends real MIDI notes out through a MIDI port. Use
this for a DAW, an instrument plugin, or any game/app that reads a MIDI keyboard.

⚠️ Important: Windows on its own has no "free" MIDI port — it only has its
built-in synth (GS Wavetable), which makes sound but can't pass the notes on
to another program. To get Velo's notes into another app you need a **virtual
MIDI cable — that's what loopMIDI** is (the MIDI equivalent of VB-CABLE for
audio).

Step-by-step (MIDI Output)

1. Install loopMIDI (free): https://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html

Open it, type a name at the bottom (e.g. Velo), click + to create the
port, and leave loopMIDI running.

1. In Velo, open the MIDI Player screen (first icon in the sidebar).

1. Top-right, click MIDI Output (next to QWERTY). A device list appears

below it.

1. In that list, pick the Velo port (the one loopMIDI created).

• If you only see "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth", Velo shows a warning that

it's a dead end — it means loopMIDI isn't running yet or the port wasn't
created. Go back to step 1.

1. Open a MIDI file and press Play. The notes are now leaving Velo through

the Velo port (you won't hear anything yet — they're waiting for another
app to "listen").

1. In the destination program, select the Velo port as its MIDI input:

• DAW / instrument plugin (FL Studio, etc.): choose Velo as the MIDI

input → sound comes out of that instrument.

• A game/helper that reads a MIDI keyboard (a "MIDI connect" feature):

point it at the Velo port.

About Roblox and letter-based pianos

Roblox itself cannot read MIDI directly. So:

• Easiest: switch Velo back to QWERTY mode — Velo types the letters

straight into the game, no loopMIDI needed.

• Or: run a "MIDI → keyboard" helper app (it converts MIDI into keystrokes),

point it at the Velo port, and the game receives the keys.

Rule of thumb:

• App reads a MIDI keyboard → use MIDI Output + loopMIDI.
• Game uses on-screen letters (Virtual Piano, Roblox) → use QWERTY,

it's direct and needs nothing extra.

This release is all about control and flexibility — playing your songs from anywhere, hiding Velo from your stream, and using any piano sound you want.

⌨️ Song key-binds — trigger a song with a single key

Right-click any song in your queue (or hit the little keyboard button) and assign it a key. From then on, pressing that key plays that song from anywhere — even while you're inside a game.

• One key = one song. Assign as many as you like.
• Velo won't let you bind a key the player itself types (that would make a song re-trigger itself while playing) — those keys are refused automatically.
• Great for live performance and for triggering backing tracks on the fly.

🎥 Stream mode — hide Velo from OBS, screen-share and screenshots

Turn it on in Settings → Appearance and Velo disappears from your recordings and captures, while staying fully visible on your own screen.

• Hides all of Velo's windows from OBS / screen-share / screenshots (uses Windows' native "exclude from capture").
• Optional sub-toggle to also hide Velo from the taskbar and Alt-Tab, for a completely clean capture.
• Honest about its limits, right in the UI: it stays on your own monitor, the window title can still be listed, and it does not cover a capture card / two-PC setup (that's a second machine filming the screen — nothing on this PC can hide from it).
• Safety net: hiding from the taskbar is only allowed once you've set the "Show / hide Velo" hotkey, so you always have a way to bring it back.

🎼 Bring your own soundfont (.sf2 / .sf3) — use any piano

Load a Keppy Steinway, a concert grand, an organ — literally any SoundFont — without bloating the app.

• Settings → Playing → "Your soundfont" → Load a .sf2 or .sf3 file, and it becomes your live instrument everywhere (Free play, Compose, playback).
• The engine that powers it is tiny (pure JavaScript, ~800 KB). The only weight is your own file, and only while it's selected — remove it and you're back to the built-in sounds instantly.
• SF3 files are far lighter than SF2 for the same sound, so prefer those if you care about RAM.
• Fully opt-in: the default piano sounds are untouched.

🔌 MIDI output guidance — play games like Roblox pianos with Velo

Velo can send its notes to a virtual MIDI cable so games and apps that read MIDI (or that convert MIDI to keystrokes) can be "played" by Velo. This release adds clear in-app guidance and a README section explaining how to set up a virtual MIDI cable (loopMIDI) so it actually works, instead of dead-ending on the Windows built-in synth.

✨ Fixes & polish

• Reliable Show / Hide hotkey — the global show/hide shortcut could previously leave the window stuck behind another app (with no way back if it was also hidden from the taskbar). It now reliably brings Velo to the front every time, even over a full-screen game.
• Dropdown labels fixed — several settings dropdowns could show "Select…" instead of your actual saved choice. Fixed across the board.
